Why are we doing it?
The idea came to us after Jim had been coasteering at Neebon Isle with some of the young people he works with. It dawned on us that there were so many amazing places in Shetland that we hadn’t seen and wanted to see and probably more that we had no idea even existed. During the 19 years we have been friends we’d had plenty of ‘adventures’ together but we’d seriously spoken about finding a real ’challenge’ to undertake together for the last 7 or 8 years. We had discussed many different options. Mount Kilimanjaro, Base Camp at Everest and John O’Groats to Lands End were a few of the possibilities that were pondered upon….usually over after a few beers, but when we discussed walking the Coastline of Shetland idea, we quickly knew that this was a challenge we couldn’t pass up.
We didn’t know if anyone had done it before. After we told a few people, we found out that Terry Williamson is currently walking the Coastline in stages for the charity Mind Your Head. If anyone can tell us of people that have previously completed the walk we would be interested to know.
How are we doing it?
We will have a GPS system that will log exactly where we have walked. We shall split the walk in to daily legs and it will be able to pinpoint it exactly and start from the same point the next day.
For most of the walk we will be able to get home each night. There are some of the nights we will be staying with people in various locations throughout Shetland, we have the use of a caravan if required and we also have a tent for the harder to reach points if required. We hope to have assistance from ‘a support team’, who will be able to drop off supplies and help out with any other tasks we may require support with.
If anyone thinks that they may be able to offer us any assistance during the walk please get in touch – our contact details are in the CONTACT US section.
We would also love to hear from anyone that had any interesting stories about parts of the coastline we will be walking or has any advice or warnings to pass on.
Can we do it?
We are going to give it our best shot. With help from the generous people of Shetland we hope we can raise this amount for these extremely worthwhile causes, which have all helped support people within Shetland. With regards to the physical challenge, we will complete the walk. We will make every possible effort to stay within the schedule that we have set but should any unforeseen circumstances arise, we may be forced to make slight alterations to our plan.
Should we encounter dangerous areas of coastline, if the weather conditions cause to much of a risk to our safety or if there are areas of coastline with restricted public access, we will stay as close to the coastline as safely possible.
A lot of people have told us we’re going to find it tough, some have said we’ll never do it….some have told us we’re mental! We’re a pretty stubborn pair so that has only solidified our determination to undertake and complete this Trek. We have also had a lot of people offer support and a great deal more positive feedback which has really fired us up for the challenge.
